As old as knowledge, as universal as learning is the way in wich the largest tile manufacturer in Britain H&R Johnson, described tiles in the advertising copy of the 1970s. A more detailed examination of the origins of tiles in architecture only serves to support a statement which initially sounds like advertising hyperbole.
The long and geographically diverse pedigree of tiles had a strong fascination for people in the nineteenth century.
